Drugs and Alcohol

Image
As a future health and physical education teacher, it is my job to educate the youth on topics like drugs, alcohol, and addiction. If young adults are not educated on the risks of these things, they will not know how damaging they are to the body. High school students are the most at risk for peer pressure. This is when you feel pressured by a friend to do something that you don't want to do. High schoolers are also at a stage in their life where they want to have freedom so they do things that they shouldn't because they think its cool. Curiosity is another reason for young adults to want to experiment with substances. Here is a chart of drug usage for high school grade levels. Brain Breaks

Did you know that after about 10-18 minutes of lecture most students begin to zone out. From personal experience, I know that this can be true. When teaching, it is important to get students up and moving throughout lessons. A great solution for this is brain breaks. Brain breaks are short fun activities that students can do to boost their energy. For some brain breaks you can even incorporate information from your lessons as a check for understanding. I have attached a website with some really great brain breaks! Go check it out! 64 Educational Brain Breaks Your Students Will Love

Nutritious Game Day Party Dish

Fall is here and so is football season! At this time of year, gatherings to watch football happen quite frequently. The hardest part about going to these functions is coming up with a dish to take. After some research on the internet, I found a healthy solution. Cheese and fruit kabobs are a healthy and delicious dish that everyone is sure to love. They are simple to make and only have a few ingredients. All you need for these are cheese cubes, fruit of your choice, and skewers. For fruit I recommend strawberries and grapes, but anything will work! Assemble the nutritious kabobs and enjoy!

Should student athletes have to take gym class?

Do you think athletes should have to take gym class? I do. This is a very controversial topic in today's society. Many people think that since athletes are active with sports, they should not have to take gym class. Although student athletes are getting physical activity outside of school, they are not learning how to be healthy and well. Less than 3% of athletes continue to play sports as they age. Since athletes only really use sports as a way to stay active, they have a harder time with finding things to keep them active once they can no longer play the sports they love. With that being said, athletes should have to take gym class, so they learn alternative routes to stay physically active. If you would like to read more on this topic here is a great article that I found. Check it out! Physical Education Requirements Questioned for Student-Athletes (edweek.org)
