Should student athletes have to take gym class?

Do you think athletes should have to take gym class? I do. This is a very controversial topic in today's society. Many people think that since athletes are active with sports, they should not have to take gym class. Although student athletes are getting physical activity outside of school, they are not learning how to be healthy and well. Less than 3% of athletes continue to play sports as they age. Since athletes only really use sports as a way to stay active, they have a harder time with finding things to keep them active once they can no longer play the sports they love. With that being said, athletes should have to take gym class, so they learn alternative routes to stay physically active.

  1. Hey Kendell! I agree that athletes should be required to take a gym class. I think this because not only does it keep them staying active, but they can also learn so much more information. if they are super into sports, they may come across new equipment, certain skills, etc. Also, it helps them maintain a schedule and routine. This will keep them up to date new training hopefully to better off their fitness or sport journey!

  2. Hey Kendall! Cool post! I never thought about this before, and after reading your thoughts I agree! Understanding how to be healthy at a younger age is crutial and important for living a longer healthier life. Educating athletes on what to do post sports is important because unfortunately when student athletes are done playing their sport some of them spiral mentally and physically.

  3. Hi Kendell! I completely agree with your post. PE classes are essential for all students, as participating in a sport alone doesn’t necessarily teach lifelong health and wellness habits. PE should focus on building physical literacy and introducing activities that students can continue throughout their lives to maintain overall wellness. I’m happy you shared this post. I’ve heard from some friends outside our major who believe PE classes should be optional for student-athletes. However, I think PE is important for everyone, as it teaches skills and knowledge that go beyond competitive sports.

  4. I loved reading your blog post! I also agree that athletes should still take a gym class. At my high school, I was not required to take a gym class because I was an athlete. It is important for athletes to understand how to take care of their bodies and stay healthy after they are done playing sports in the future. Physical Education classes can be beneficial to everyone and can help students learn how to live a healthy lifestyle!

  5. I believe athletes should take gym class, even if they are involved in sports outside of school. Gym class teaches students a variety of fitness techniques and lifelong health habits that go beyond the specific skills needed for sports. While student-athletes may already be physically active, gym class can introduce them to alternative exercises that help maintain their fitness after their sports careers end. Since only a small percentage of athletes continue playing sports as they age, it's essential for them to learn different ways to stay active. Overall, gym class promotes well-rounded physical education that benefits everyone, including athletes.

  6. I really enjoyed reading your blog! I completely agree with you. Students that are active in sports should still have to go to a PE class. They can learn to be educated on health and well being for their bodies as they age. Sports may keep them fit, but like you said a lot of students do not continue with their sports after high school. Having a PE class ensures they actually learn.
